OK Round Tonight

23 Aug

I played my last night of league tonight.  No competition, just out for fun. When I told my husband that this morning he said something about “No competition.”  I said, “If we’re keeping score there’s competition, its just only with myself.”  Whether its applied to golf or life in general, I love this quote by Ernest Hemingway, “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”  That’s my goal with golf.

I was hitting the ball really well off the tee tonight even though I still haven’t had the guts to hit a wood since my last meltdown.  But, my 4H is serving me pretty well.  I had tee shots of 220, 192, 172, 171, 168 and 163.  Now, I guess a 60-yard difference in one club may be a problem in the future but for now, I’m happy with the distance and solid shots.  Can’t wait until I learn to hit a driver!!

Plus I only had 3 3-putts and I had 3 1-putts.  Of course, the 1-putts weren’t always the best.   Sometimes they came after a flubbed chip where I putted from the fringe and then only had 1 “official” putt.

Here’s the card…

And this is what my progress chart looks like….

All in all, a good night.  I worked all day, played 9 holes of golf, did a P90X Shoulders & Arms and AbRipper workouts and now I have about an hour of work to do.  But, I wanted to get the post done because I was happy with it.  Except for the 6th hole when I went into the water TWICE…or the 5th hole where I had a great drive, flubbed second shot, decent third shot but then went in the thick grass left of the green, pitched into the trap, barely got out, pitched well and then 1 putted.

Pretty satisfied but lots of room for improvement.

Good Time on the Range

7 Aug

Went to the range tonight and really hit the ball well.  Started with my 5H instead of my 9I and it seemed the swing came easier.  Was hitting them straight and long for me. Had some issues with some inconsistency due to my left knee collapsing on the back swing and coming down too steep.  Everything was going well until I got to my 3W.  I was hitting it so well the other night and I could not get it going tonight.  I was disappointed as I hit or, more accurately, mis-hit the last ball.

I went over to the putting green to do some pitches and putts and that went pretty well.  I had an a-ha moment about what I was doing wrong with my 3W.  I found the other night that I hit it best when I felt that my right arm was almost pulling my left arm to full extension.  Someone had left practically an entire bucket of range balls on the putting green so I grabbed 5 of those and went back to the range.

I hit 2 with the 5H just to get my swing.  Teed one up and hit it almost 200 yards, right on line twice in a row.  Issue resolved.  I was more excited about being able to figure out the problem and fix it in one session than I was about the distance I was getting.

I probably won’t hit tomorrow.  Hoping this progress shows up during golf league on Thursday and a tournament I’m playing in on Saturday.  I’m hoping to shoot close to 100 on Saturday.  The slope of this course is 129, the league course where I’ve shot low 50s the past few weeks is 128.  My handicap is 35 so if can shoot close to 100 I should have a good net.

Either way, I’ll have fun.
